A story goes that a NASA scientist was asked what he thought was the greatest thing to come out of the space program. Everyone listening expected the scientist to expound on the vast scientific knowledge coming out of the program - only to find their jaws dropping when the scientist replied, "Velcro."
There are many products and applications which have come out of the space and defense programs of the United States - Velcro, the internet, advances in computer technology, better jet engines, and others both whimsical and profound.

One little known offshoot of the space program is dichroic glass - sometimes known as 'fused glass' which is used in jewelry, the optical and security industry and other applications.
Dichroic Glass Defined
Dichroic glass stems from the fusion of the Greek word di-chroos, which means two (di) and color (chroos) and refers to the capability of some crystals to show two different colors when you look at them from different angles. Put another way, if you hold up a piece of dichroic glass, you will see one color being reflected back at you while another color is passing through. You would also see two different colors if you look at the same glass from different angles.
Dichroic glass was developed by NASA for use as face plates for space suits, which needed transparent mediums which filtered out unwanted light spectrums such as harmful infrared or ultraviolet rays. The new development eventually found its way into other industries and is now being used for scientific instruments, camcorders and the popular PIA lights for cars, trucks and factories.
Jewelry makers and the community of art glass makers also discovered dichroic glass and were soon making good use of its fascinating characteristics.
